Jessica and I glanced out the window and saw one another from across our rooms in the GLC. We popped out of our dwelling to meet in the middle with some snacks. While chatting about our project, we noticed that hidden in the vines beside us stored small grapes. For all four years, both living on campus have never noticed that this particular space in the GLC contained edible produce that was right outside our doors.
Getting excited, our original plan was to make some wind chime to gain the audible attention of onlookers. However, after brainstorming further, we decided that framing the grapes would be a more meaningful presentation. When thinking about frames, our thoughts directly went to a typical rigid, right-angled frame. Then we noticed the flow and circular motion of nature. We decided to push the frame idea further to incorporate curved edges.
When remembering my experience in Prehistoric to Gothic Art History with Lisa Deboer, I began to recollect the significance of circles, particularly in the Pantheon in Rome. The imagery of circles represents the completeness of God’s creation. Building off of that, we toyed with the idea of the cycles of produce and life. In this vine of grapes, we discovered an array of ages of grapes new to wilted. To capture the concept of creation and its cyclical nature, we went with circular frames. When selecting which grapevines to highlight in the vine, we continued with the idea of a circular cycle: young, mature, and old grapes.
Now for the material. We began to question which type of material would highlight the natural essence of the space and bendable to create our circular frame. When walking into the craft studio, I discovered the perfect tool: basket weaving materials. We bound the natural, bendable material together with twine and hot glue. When thinking and discussing further, we found that it was almost as if we were harvesting the grapes with recognition to space rather than a physical harvest by using this material. We were observing the spaces which both of our minds did not gather before the meeting. By slowing down and chatting with a friend, we celebrated the beauty which God has given humanity.
