For my generosity performance piece, I decided to make the class tea. During my sophomore year, I went through the motions of a "sophomore slump" until I met a great group of people. Every day, we would gather in one of our rooms and fire up the kettle and invest in challenging and beneficial conversations with one another. It was most helpful because of the uplifting atmosphere words of affirmation. Thus I wanted to further this concept of community and generosity to my 4D intermedia class. For me, this project highlights my love language of Acts of Service. My 4D class is so important that I wanted them to feel the same love I felt from that small group of "teatime" friends.
For this project to come to fruition, I needed to find a way to make a prop. After brainstorming, I thought the best way would be to customize cups. These cups held their name, the meaning of their name, the terms I think about when that person comes into my mind, and floral decor that looked like their personality.
During the presentation, I explained my piece, passed out the cups, poured the hot water in, and elected three leaders to find two others with the same description word. I invited them to engage in the community and ask questions of one another. Questions such as: "What are you love language, and how could you use this to better your community?" and "What kinds of words would you use to describe your group members?" It was fascinating to see different ways others interacted with one another. I was incredibly impactful to hear one of my classmates had recently broken up with her boyfriend. She told me about the struggles of the process and then told me about the signs of freedom that she had seen all around. Funny enough, the meaning of her name is a free woman. Connections with my classmates encourages me to invite others into the "teatime" circle and hopefully God will be able to move through me and comfort those who are in need of love.
