Measuring History

Writer's picture: Caroline WyckoffCaroline Wyckoff

The Wyckoff side to my family came over from Holland in 1652 and settled in New York. Today their building still stands in Brooklyn, New York, and has maintained its farming and sustainability. Another side of my family comes from Denmark, which we still have connections with distant relatives. I wanted to find a way to merge all of the things that make up who we are as an entire family, so I went with a mobile out of sticks. Getting to Westmont, I was completely stressed and felt super frazzled about completing this project because my other art plans fell through, and it was tough for me to acclimate. While stressing and studying, I decided to go down to the Westmont garden, listen to the chapel, and find inspiration using my resources. Thinking about my family tree, I thought it would be perfect for collecting a ton of branches that have fallen off over time, which shows the progression of history and time. The person in the middle of the mobile is me being surrounded by all the components that make up my identity and family history. Next to me, the house represents my family home, and the long and complicated bloodline, which has created who I am. To my right is a cross symbolizing my relationship with Jesus and how my family has mostly been consistently Christian. To the far right is a leaf that is important to me because gardening is in my blood on both sides, and I think it is cool that I can continue the tradition. One day, I would love to explore the farming techniques that the Wyckoff family used during that stay in Brooklyn. Lastly, the far left is a heart that is the cheesiest of them all but resembles the harmony and love that has come through the years.
